QUESTIONS:

1. What is the BHS "Forever Brave" Project?

The Forever Brave Project is a collaborative effort of BHS alumni, school leaders, the Davis Education Foundation, the Davis School District, and community supporters to preserve the history of the BHS Brave and honor what the Brave statue represents, while creating educational opportunities for future Bountiful High School students through scholarships.

2. What is the mission of the project?

The project has three primary goals:

  • Provide scholarships for deserving BHS students

  • Preserve the history of the BHS Brave and honor the values and traditions that it represents

  • Strengthen connections among BHS alumni and the Bountiful community

The project honors the past while investing in the future.

3. Why should I participate?

Your participation helps:

  • Create lasting educational opportunities for future students

  • Preserve and share an important part of BHS history

  • Honor the values of courage, character, resilience, and school pride represented by the Brave

  • Build a legacy that future generations can celebrate

  • Strengthen school and community spirit

Whether you are a BHS graduate, family member, local business owner, or community supporter, your participation can make a meaningful difference.

4. How can I support the project?

You can participate by:

  • Making a charitable contribution

  • Purchasing an authorized Forever Brave replica sculpture

  • Encouraging classmates, family, and friends to participate

  • Sharing information about the project

  • Assisting with volunteer and fundraising activities

Please contribute now (tax-deductible).

5. What is the BHS Brave?

The BHS Brave is a cherished three-quarter life-size bronze sculpture created by renowned artist Dr. Avard Tennyson Fairbanks and commissioned by the BHS Classes of 1975 and 1976. For many decades, the sculpture has symbolized courage, determination, resilience, character, and school pride.

6. What happened to the original Brave mascot?

The Brave served as Bountiful High School's official mascot from the school's opening in 1951 until 2021. In April 2021, the Davis School District approved changing the mascot to the Redhawks, with the new identity taking effect during the 2021–2022 school year.

7. Does the mascot change affect the sculpture?

No. Although the official mascot changed in 2021, the BHS Brave sculpture remains an important part of the school's history and cultural heritage. The Forever Brave Project seeks to preserve that history and honor the ideals and memories that the Brave has represented for generations of students and alumni.

8. Why is the sculpture historically and artistically significant?

Dr. Avard Tennyson Fairbanks (1897–1987) is regarded nationally and internationally as one of Utah's most accomplished and influential sculptors. During his lifetime, he created more than one hundred public monuments and sculptures displayed in parks, museums, universities, churches, government buildings, and private collections throughout the United States and abroad.

The BHS Brave is both an important work of art and a meaningful symbol of Bountiful High School's history, traditions, and values.

9. Why are replica sculptures being produced?

Authorized replicas allow alumni and community members to own a meaningful piece of BHS history while helping support scholarships for future students.

Under the governing agreements, proceeds are used exclusively to:

  • Support the BHS Forever Brave Scholarship Fund

  • Provide associated not-for-profit resources for BHS/ DSD

  • Cover manufacturing and shipping expenses *

  • Maintain working capital for future production

* All proceeds after actual production costs benefit the scholarship fund

10. Is this project officially authorized?

Yes.

The Estate of Dr. Avard T. Fairbanks formally approved granting the Davis School District ongoing rights to use the Brave image exclusively for scholarship fundraising purposes.

The Davis School District has also authorized qualified contractors to assist with producing approved replicas under the terms and limitations of the governing agreements.

11. Who oversees the project?

The project is supported by:

Davis School District (DSD) – Legal authority and oversight.

Davis Education Foundation (DEF) – Financial stewardship and administration.

  • Kara Toone, Foundation Director

  • Kristen Buchi, Student Advocacy Coordinator

  • Sherry Miggin, Partnerships & Development Coordinator

This broad coalition provides governance, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

12. How does the scholarship fund work?

The Forever Brave Scholarship Fund is intended to be an ongoing, potentially perpetual scholarship fund that grows over time through charitable donations and authorized fundraising activities.

If the fund reaches sufficient size, a portion of the assets may be invested so that scholarships can eventually be supported through investment earnings while preserving principal for future generations.

13. Will I be asked to make annual donations?

No.

Annual donations are entirely voluntary. However, ongoing contributions are welcomed and help ensure the scholarship fund continues to grow and support future students.

14. Will there be fundraising campaigns every year?

That decision will be made independently by reunion committees and participating graduating classes. The Forever Brave Project welcomes support from all graduating classes and community partners.

15. Who can donate?

Everyone is welcome to participate, including:

  • BHS alumni from all graduating classes

  • Family members and friends

  • Community organizations

  • Local businesses

  • Current and former faculty and staff

  • Other supporters of BHS and the Bountiful community

Many employers also offer charitable matching gift programs.

16. Who chooses the scholarship recipients?

Recipients are selected by the Bountiful High School Counseling Department according to the scholarship guidelines established by the Forever Brave Scholarship Committee.

Direct family members of individuals responsible for determining scholarship awards are excluded from consideration.

17. What qualities does the scholarship recognize?

The scholarship primarily recognizes heroic character and personal qualities rather than academic achievement alone.

Examples include students who:

  • Rise above difficult personal circumstances

  • Demonstrate perseverance and resilience

  • Exhibit dignity in the face of bullying or adversity

  • Show compassion and friendship toward overlooked classmates

  • Display courage and selfless character that positively influences others

The scholarship honors the spirit of service and sacrifice demonstrated by BHS graduates who have served—or fallen in the line of duty—in military service, law enforcement, or firefighting.

18. Who was the first scholarship recipient?

The inaugural recipient was Jonathan Galloway, BHS Class of 2025.

Jonathan was selected because he demonstrated exceptional perseverance and heroic character while overcoming profound personal challenges. In September 2024, his mother passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Despite the emotional and logistical difficulties that followed, Jonathan remained committed to his education and successfully achieved his goal of graduating from BHS at the end of his junior year.

Jonathan has been accepted for enrollment at the University of Utah.

He exemplifies the character, resilience, and determination that the Forever Brave Scholarship seeks to recognize and support.

19. Can donors learn about scholarship recipients?

Yes.

Donors who provide their email address when making an online contribution may receive updates about scholarship recipients and the impact of the fund while fully respecting student privacy requirements under FERPA.

20. What is the current scholarship award amount?

The current Forever Brave Scholarship award is $2,000 per recipient.

As the Forever Brave Scholarship Fund continues to grow through charitable donations, the long-term goal is to build a permanent endowment through our 501(c)(3) partner, the Davis Education Foundation (DEF) arm of the Davis School District (DSD). Once the endowment reaches a sustainable level, annual scholarship awards may be funded primarily from investment earnings, allowing the fund to continue supporting students for generations while preserving its principal. As the fund grows, the annual scholarship amount may also increase over time.

The experience of our inaugural recipient, Jonathan Galloway (Class of 2025), illustrates another meaningful benefit of the program. After learning Jonathan's story, BHS alumni voluntarily stepped forward to provide additional financial assistance beyond the scholarship itself. While such additional support cannot be anticipated or guaranteed, the Forever Brave Scholarship helps connect deserving students with a caring and engaged alumni community that may choose to offer further encouragement and assistance.

21. Is the scholarship award restricted to educational expenses? If so, who receives the funds?

Yes. The Forever Brave Scholarship is intended exclusively to support a recipient's continued education, whether at a college, university, technical school, trade school, or other qualified post-secondary educational institution.

To ensure the scholarship is used for its intended educational purpose, the award is administered through the Davis Education Foundation. Scholarship funds are paid directly to the recipient's educational institution on the student's behalf, rather than being distributed directly to the recipient as cash.

22. If I want to donate funds from my Donor Advised Fund (DAF) or similar, how do I make those arrangements?

Please contact Dave Turner (see FAQ #23 below) if you wish to donate from either a:

  • Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

  • Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)

  • Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)

  • Private Foundation

  • or similar

He can help direct you to the right people at the Davis Education Foundation who can assist in that transaction.
